Where to Buy Opa's Smoked Meats: A Complete Guide

There are a few ways people first encounter Opa's. A friend hands them a sandwich at a backyard cookout in Texas. A restaurant menu in Fredericksburg lists Opa's sausage next to one of the entrées. A gift box arrives in December from a relative who knows what they're doing. Somebody at the grocery store points at the case and says you should try this one.

And then comes the same question every time. Where do you get it?

This post is the answer. Opa's reaches its customers in four ways — at a grocery store near you, online at opassmokedmeats.com, at the deli on Washington Street in Fredericksburg, and on the menus of restaurants and at community events across Texas. Same smokehouse, same family, same products, same standards. Here's how to find Opa's, however you prefer to shop.

At a Grocery Store Near You

This is how most people find Opa's. Major grocery chains across Texas, the South and Southwest carry the core Opa's smoked sausage lineup in the refrigerated meat case — usually in a section dedicated to specialty and regional sausage. If you've shopped for sausage at a Texas grocery store in the last few years, there's a good chance you've walked past it.

The case typically holds the eight grocery varieties — seven smoked, plus the cooked Bratwurst: Country Blend, Beef, Jalapeño Cheddar, Jalapeño, Hatch Green Chile, Habanero, Bratwurst, and the Chicken Poblano Monterey Jack Smoked Sausage. Stock varies by store and region — not every variety is in every case, and some stores carry larger pack sizes than others. The fastest way to find which Opa's products are at your nearest store is the store locator at opassmokedmeats.com.

One thing worth knowing: the Opa's products on a grocery shelf are the exact same products made at the Washington Street smokehouse in Fredericksburg. Same recipe, same smoke, same natural pork casing. The deli sells more variety, but the products that overlap between grocery and deli are identical. That's the reality of Opa's distribution — one smokehouse, many shelves.

Online for Nationwide Shipping

For customers outside an area where our product is on their grocery store shelf, or for anyone who wants Opa's delivered straight to their door, the full lineup is available at opassmokedmeats.com. The online store carries everything — the eight grocery sausages, plus the heritage and specialty products that don't typically appear on a grocery shelf: Knackwurst, Head Cheese, Liverwurst, Peppered Cured Smoked Beef, Peppered Cured Smoked Turkey Breast, Smoked Beef Tenderloin, Smoked Pork Tenderloin, summer sausage in Original and Jalapeño Cheddar, Sausage on a Stick, and Smoked Whole Chickens.

The Sausage Sampler is the top gift item — a curated box that includes Jalapeño Cheddar alongside the rest of the core lineup. It's the box that introduces a friend to Opa's, the holiday gift for the in-laws who already get everything they need, the way to thank a client who's harder to shop for. Gift wrapping and shipping direct to the recipient are options at checkout.

Every online order ships from the Washington Street smokehouse, packed in insulated containers with gel packs to keep the products cold for the full transit time. Shipping is nationwide. The website displays current shipping options at checkout, including expedited delivery when timing matters.

One product note: Knackwurst is available at the deli in Fredericksburg and online — but not at grocery stores. If you've had Knackwurst before and can't find it locally, the website is where to look.

At Opa's Deli & Market in Fredericksburg

The original Opa's storefront is at 410 S Washington Street in Fredericksburg, Texas — a few blocks off Main Street, on Highway 87. Open Monday–Friday from 8 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday from 8 AM to 4 PM, closed Sunday. Phone 830-997-3358.

This is where everything starts. The smokehouse that supplies the grocery chains, the online orders, and the restaurant accounts is in the same building as the retail counter. Walk through the double doors and you'll find a full case of smoked sausage and heritage products, a butcher counter with fresh cuts, a made-to-order sandwich counter, a tasting station with samples on the griddle, prepared foods made fresh in the deli kitchen every morning, and a specialty market with cheeses, German mustards, crackers, Texas beverages, and premium knives.

The deli is also the only place to find some of Opa's heritage and specialty products in person. Head cheese, liverwurst, Knackwurst, and certain seasonal items are made for the deli case and the online store, not for grocery distribution.

If you've been buying Opa's at your grocery store for years and you've never been to the source, the deli is worth the trip. It's the one spot where you can see where the products come from, try something new at the tasting station, and walk out with heritage items that don't appear anywhere else.
